From the 10th-13th June 2002, the FAO summit took place in Rome, Italy.
For years animal right activists have been claiming that the Vegetarian choice is one of peace and non-violence not only towards animals, but also towards those billion and a half undernourished people, who do not have enough food because of the unequal resources distribution of resources and of the wasting of resources due mostly to intensive livestock breeding and the senselessly exaggerated meat consumption of affluent countries.
Unfortunately, cliché of an Animal Rights activist as a person who thinks "only" to animals and not of starving children, is still very widespread. This is convenient to people who don't want to see the connection between our consumption and the exploitation of Third World countries. This point of view serves the interests of those who want to solve the "hunger" problem by means of other iniquities and violence, such as using GMOs and exporting the same technologies which have destroyed our environment.
Partly because of these reasons, an open dialogue with those who could become our allies has been and still is difficult, with meaningful but occasional exceptions.
We believe that the FAO summit could offer an occasion to make them understand our point of view, to link to other movements which struggle for a different world, and to make them understand that AR-activists too struggle for a different world, in which violence on animals and humans would be banned and in which every living being would have the right to live with dignity.
Such an important subject should be tackled by all those who are concerned about animals rights and spreading the vegetarian lifestyle, so that, united, we can present a precise and forceful initiative, and request a concrete commitment.
To promote this initiative we have formed a broad alliance of Organizations and Scientific Committees which will submit a concrete proposal to the FAO, to be presented during a press conference in Rome a few days before the summit. This proposal is also supported by various personalities from the cultural world.
